Project Sothea has been in partnership with Khmer Foundation since its establishment in 2010. KF has played an essential role in the project as the local liaison and coordinator, connecting us to the relevant personnel in the villages that we reach out to in the rural regions of Battambang province.
Since 2015, Project Sothea has set up the Sothea-IU eXchange (SIX) Programme, where Cambodian students reading healthcare-related courses are invited to join us on our outreach efforts, participating in an exchange with the medical students and doctors of our team, serving also as translators as we engage the rural communities during health screenings and health education sessions.
Handa Medical Centre was started in 2013 and it has since served as a general medical facility for the population in Battambang. We have established a reliable referral system for chronic and emergency cases from our health screenings by signing an official agreement during our trip in December 2016. With this partnership, we will be able to provide the villagers a means to receive subsidised medical care of at least 10%. Through this, we hope to enhance the public-private partnership in health to achieve better coverage for the disadvantaged.
Project Sothea collaborated with Solutions to End Poverty from 2012 to 2014, offering free health screening and basic health education to residents of SMILE Village in Phnom Penh. We have since handed over the Phnom Penh leg of our project to another student led group who remains in partnership with STEP.
